Can you go to the emergency room for a toothache while pregnant? The pain is going up my cheekbone to my eye and my ear hurts sometimes too. The dentist can't see me for close to two weeks (NEXT FRIDAY, AUGUST 29TH!!) & I can't wait that long, I'm worried it could be an abscess or something, and I don't want infections spreading through my body or the babies. What can I do?

  1. Yes, go to emergency. I did while pregnant and they extracted my tooth.

  2. Yes, and you should probably go to be on the safe side.  They can at least give you an antibiotic until you can be seen by the dentist.  It may be expensive, but your health is more important along with the babies.  Don't wait until your face  swells up like a balloon!  Then you'll really be in trouble.  Maybe try another dentist also??  I'm sure someone takes walk-ins/emergencies.

  3. You can go to the ER, but as was said before, they will probably just put you on antibiotics and that's it. Very expensive and you will probably wait a long time for a prescription. I would call another dentist and be sure to tell them that you are pregnant and having a painful dental emergency. Any good dentist will accommodate a true emergency and it sure sounds like you qualify .If you cannot find a dentist in your area, call 1-800-DENTIST. They will find someone to see you.

  4. Hello, YES, you can indeed go to the ER, but unless they have an in house Dental service all you will most likely get will be Antibiotics and maybe pain medication...They may be able to call a dentist and get you in his or her office as an emergency case...If they can't do that you need to go to the Yellow pages and under Dentist look for a Dentist who provides After Hours Emergency Dental Services....From what you describe it sounds as though you have an abscess and that means your dealing with a concentrated infection...depending on the amount of infection you have, which will be determined by an Xray, the DDS may or may not open the abscessed tooth immediately. I would bet he will so that the infection can drain,,,He will no doubt keep you on antibiotics for two to three weeks following performing the actual Root Canal procedure.....Your right about getting the infection under control as it very well can enter the blood stream and when that happens it travels to the most vulnerable part of the body and that could be your fetus...Call the ER immediately and find out if they have a dental service...if not go to the Yellow pages as suggested. Good luck and I wish you well.
