HELP!!! WHICH PASSPORT? CITIZENSHIP? Our baby will be born in the UK, to a German mum and an Australian dad.

I am confused! Our baby will be born in December, here in London. My partner and I have been living here for the last 6 years. I am German and my partner is Australian (with indefinite leave to remain in the UK). We are planning to move to Australia once the baby is old enough to travel. What citizenship will our baby have once it is born? What passport(s) can we apply for? British and Australian? Can one have more than 2 passports? When and where do we need to apply?

Thanks to anyone who is taking the time to answer this.

  1. Hi your baby will be registered in the UK so it can recieve British citizenship, but you can also apply for the duel or multiple citizenship. I am not sure exactly how to go about this, But I know there are several companies that can help do all the applications and legal bits for you. I am British and married to a south African with a baby on the way.We have been using a company online that deals with south African nationality issues but I know you can find one for each situation. Otherwise you have to deal with the home office of each country.

    Good luck with the baby.

  2. Hi, my grand daughter is the product of English mother, Spanish father. She was born in Spain, at the moment she is carrying a Spanish passport. She can have a UK passport as her mother is a British subject and has one. So in effect J can have duel nationality and 2 passports. It depends on where her advantages lie. I have always thought that if she wanted to live in the States  when she is older she would be welcomed more if carrying a British passport than a Spanish one?? Just a theory

You can apply to have a baby put on your own passport at any time. Having their own, I am not sure if there is an age when you can apply. We did J's when she was 2. Hope this may be of help to you. Good luck where ever you go.

  3. It use to be that you could only have Australian citizenship with no other citizenship. Try checking with the Australian Office in the UK.

Ideally your baby would have EU (choose between UK/Germany) and Australian citizenship. I would contact the Australian embessy in the UK and ask there.

  4. Emily C is right.

  5. Go to Australia House in the Strand and find out there.  If you want your baby to be Oz I'm sure there's no problem with that.

  6. as long as you both have indefinite leave to remain in UK,  then the child can have all 3. The german law says he may or may not be allowed to  keep the german  citizenship unless he applies for it when he is older. see links below.

UK and Aussie citizenships he will keep for a lifetime.

parents must apply for the aussie at the aussie embassy before returning to Aussie.

if you are not married and you (the mother) do not have indefinite leave to remain, then the child may or may not be allowed to take British citizenship. You will have to check with the Home office about that. In which case then the child will be German and Aussie.
