i have read that the Onkyo 805 down scales even 1080p sources to 720p. is this true? ive got a 1080p tv and a blue ray, and am considering buying this receiver, but why would i want to buy a reciver for a home theater system that actually reduces the quality of my picture?? another receive i am considering is the Yamaha 663. Does the Yamaha have the same problem? I am definitely no technological, so advise in lehmans terms would be much appreciated. Any recommendations on which receiver is the better overall receiver? thanks in advance for your help

  1. neither the onkyo 805 or yamaha 663 will upscale video. they both however will pass a 1080p signal. your bd 1080p signal will be "passed " to your tv at 1080p. if you want upscaling the onkyo 875 and the yamaha 863 have  good upscaling processors.

  2. The Onkyo will pass 720p, 1080i and 1080p through without up (or down) conversion through HDMI. What you probably read is that it will convert 480i/p to 720p but the higher resolution video is left unchanged. Both are very good a/v receivers. I like the Denon AVR-1909 for around the same $ ($650ish).

  3. That's only true for analog to digital conversion. Here's the deal. 1080i signals connected via component inputs will be converted to 720p when output via HDMI. 1080p signals connected via component inputs cannot be output at all via HDMI.

This does not affect signals input via HDMI.

*I know the people on here like to knock Sony receivers but if you're not sure about the 805, the Sony 4300ES is worth looking into.

  4. All flat panel tvs are fixed resolution devices meaning they can only display something that matches their inherent resolution i.e. 1080p tv can only display 1080p. In order for this tv to display any other resolution the incoming signal in the case of a 720p signal, must be UPconverted to 1080p. This can be done by the dvd player by the tv or the receiver. Usually it is done better by the dvd player or receiver. Now the same is true in reverse. If you have a 720p tv all incoming 1080p blu ray signals must be DOWNconverted to 720p. In your case you have a 1080p tv and dvd player and no need of DOWNconverting to 720p.
