HELP WITH FINAL CUT EXPRESS 4!?!?

i just bought final cut express 4. first off, whenever i open the program the message about not connecting to the external hardrive firewire or whatever pops up. so then i want to do the clone effect. i uploaded both video files, but now my cropping tool doesnt work!? i click on it, and the x on the video is supposed to pop up, and it doesnt. 3. i wanted to do the quick capture thing, and that doesnt connect to my mac built in webcam. I REALLY NEED HELP! PLEASE!

not sure about the firewire problem or the webcam but for the x or wireframe over the video that you're editing, go to view and then click image plus wireframe. the x will pop up in the top right viewer and you'll be able to use the crop tool to make that clone effect.
