  1. First unit - Length

    The American system use inches, feet, yards.

    The metric system uses meters.

    A meter is slightly longer than a yard.

    1 meter = 10 decimeters

    1 meter = 100 centimeters

    1 meter = 1000 millimeters

    10 meters = 1 decameter

    100 meters = 1 hectameter

    1000 meters = 1 kilometer

    Next off, weight.

    The American system uses pounds, ounces, and tons.

    The metric system uses grams.

    Lastly, volume.

    The American system uses gallons, quarts, and pints.

    The metric system uses liters.

    To convert any of these three, (See the lengths for an example)

    1 base unit = 10 deci-

    1 base unit = 100 centi-

    1 base unit = 1000 milli-

    10 base units = 1 deca-

    100 base units = 1 hecta-

    1000 base units = 1 kilo-

    Now, on to scientific notation.

    Scientific notation always uses a base number between 1 and 10.

    So, say you had to convert 255 into scientific notation.  You would move the decimal over until there is only one number in front of the decimal, so it would become 2.55. Then, you would add x10, making it 2.55x10. Finally, since you moved the decimal over two places, add a ^2 onto the end. So your final answer is 2.55x10^2.

    More examples:

    123 = 1.23x10^2

    55 = 5.5x10

    5656 = 5.656x10^3
