  1. The average length of "walk" when playing a regulation 18 hole golf course is 5 miles

  2. The short muni I have played is only 5300 yards total length of the 18 holes.   Tour courses can be as long as 7500 yards.  I think this year's US Open at Torrey Pines will play 7400 yards.

  3. A golf course can certainly be measured in area, but that would not really mean much since a lot of that area is not even used for the game.

The proper measurement is the distance. Each hole has a distance associated with each tee box. These distances are added up to give the size of the course.

There are courses out there that only have 9 holes and courses that have 27 holes. These kind of throw a monkey wrench into the whole average size equation.

Some courses are a par 72, which is typical. There are also courses that are par 70. The par for a hole is determined by length, among other things, so this too can mess with the average length of a course.

  4. The average size of a golf course ( area ) is measured in acres. This includes the area through which the course is routed as well as all the ponds, rivers, hills and hummocks on the property. Most older courses were strictly designed for the sport. There were no houses, condos, golf villas etc. attached to the properties. Today, many golfing developments may cover huge amounts of land due to the housing aspect rather than the golf.
