Hi, i'm looking for a hardtail MTB with disc brakes a must, budget up to £600. Used on Cannock chase 'follow the dog' course (see you tube!) and similar terrain.

I'm down to the following... TREK 6000, KONA cindercone, CLAUD BUTLER cape wrath D24 or a SPECIALIZED rockhopper.

Any help would be greatful or are there other reccommendations?

Cheers.

  1. Specilaized are good value for the money and their customer service team are fantastic.

Trek have good back up too but i would recommend the Specialized as i find their geometry is ideal. It feels like the bike is really chuckable and inspires confidence!

But you must test ride first!

  2. go for what ever you like if the bike is cheaper than your bugit you can always spend the rest upgrading and enough left to buy a few pints!.

  3. kona or specialized both wicked frames, go for either of these , whichever is better specced. deffo try and go for hydraulic brakes over cable pull.

  4. First of all...I'd urge you to stay away from the Trek 6000. The wheels are very heavy and will not stay true. The front derailleur is poorly made as well. You'll spend more time upgrading than riding.  Those kind of parts should be Grade-A for as much as you're spending on that bike.

Specialized makes great bikes. You almost can't go wrong with a Rockhopper comp...or anything else they make. Bike snobs love them.

Instead of the Kona Cinder Cone....I'd check out the Kona Kula Primo. Great bike., better components than the Cone for about the same price.

The G2 Avalanche 1.0 is a very popular bike with MTB enthusiasts, and for good reason. Very tough and comfortable. Will stop on a dime.

But my absolute favorite in your price range is the Jamis Komodo. Great components, lightweight, great frame......an absolute winner.

Your best bet is taking a trip to your local bike store to test ride your favorite 2 or 3 bikes to find out which bike makes you the happiest.

Also....check out www.MTBR.com. Tons of user reviews on bikes, parts, trails......everything you can imagine.

    Hope this helps. Happy riding!

  5. The Trek didn't get a good MBR write up, the same with the D24.  The Cape Wrath isn't bad, but for £600 you could do better.  Although I would probably buy the Rockhopper, I believe that it is still Vbrake at this price range.  MBR have got their £500 bike comparison this month, so that is worth a read.  But I will go with everybody else and say either the Rockhopper or the Kona.

    Luck

  6. I would go for the Kona or the Specialized.
