  1. Your instructor is partially correct. Auto insurance is designed to protect the vehicle in many cases. However, If a police officer pulls you over and looks at your mom's insurance policy on the vehicle and even though you are not a driver on the policy the officer will not write you a ticket. One thing any driver should know is that in many states all licensed drivers in a household have to be on the policy unless they sign off otherwise. So, your mom will have to put you on the insurance policy if you are living in the household once you are a licensed driver. Your mom will have to write  her auto insurance company stating you will never have access or drive any of her vehicles in order for her to keep you off the policy. This protects the insurance company from drivers taking advantage of them. This prevents the insurance company from insuring a vehicle in which they don't know who is driving it. To be honest your instructor should not even be confusing any future drivers with these matters. The fact is that every driver needs to be insured and should do it the way insurance companies design it to be. You can be added to your mom's policy to save money vs. having your own policy. Young drivers or first time drivers like yourself are a higher risk to insurance companies because of your age and lack of experience which results in higher rates for these drivers. The best way to save money on auto insurance over the long haul is by staying insured at all times with no lapse in coverages and by keeping a clean driving record by avoiding tickets, claims if possible and accidents.
