  1. Blu ray holds more memory, and has more movies.

    go to highdefdigest.com

  2. If you want to get a taste of hi def with low budget, you can get Toshiba HD-A3 from amazon.com for $121.48.  It costs even less than some up-conversion dvd player.  However, HD-DVD's future is unknown.

If you have more money to spend, a lot of people recommend to get a PS3 to watch blu-ray discs.

  3. Hi Guitar Master,

HD DVD (Toshiba) vs Blu Ray (Sony).

The battle rages and it looks like consumers will have to face a dual format much like the dash R and plus R DVDs.

Samsung & LG already offer dual format machines and others will follow. This probably means both formats will survive.

Both use interactive menus but differences are – Blu-Ray capacity is 50Gb and HD-DVD is 30Gb. HD-DVD is region free while Blu-Ray is divided into three regions. (Figures Sony will try to stick it to the consumer) A disadvantage to HD-DVD is they are not all hard coated as are the Blu-Ray. HD-DVDs scratch as easily as regular DVDs while the Blu-Ray are more scratch resistant.

  4. Dont waste your money on any HD-DVD Player, several major studios are stopping production of that format, and are supporting BLU-RAY instead.  The players might be cheap, but you wont find any good movies for them in the future.

  5. There's no big difference in video/sound quality between Blu-Ray and HD DVD.....the only real big difference is the selection of movies each has to offer.

If you want the broadest selection then my suggestion is the Samsung dual format Blu-ray HD DVD player....it plays both.

  6. They are backed by 2 different groups of companies.

Both can carry 1080p video and un-compressed (better than DVD) audio.

Right now the Toshiba HD-A3 is about $175, up-converts standard DVD's and is HD-DVD compatible.

There are "up-converting" DVD players - but these take the 1940's video and magnify it a bit so it comes out as a 720 or 1080 bitstream - but it's not really HD.
