HELP... did Mexicans own California?

Large parts of it were granted to various Spanish families when California was part of the Spanish colonial empire.  The Yorba family and the Irvine land grants were some of the largest.  But they were not Mexican.  

Along the border areas there were many Mexican land owners.  The border disputes and political fighting over who owned what are the stuff of legend and many a Hollywood film.  But in fact the Mexicans never did own CA.
