Question:

HELP!! for the purchase of a Les Paul Epihone custom

I want to buy a les paul epiphone custom guitar. However, the one I tried in the shop, the neck was a bit too large at the 12 to 14 fret.

my luthier said he could sand it down and then varnish it back up (not unlike the zak wyle version) to make it a more comfortable fit for me .

my questions is...will this 1. change the sound considerably? and 2. lessen the value of the guitar later down the road? I'm not even sure my hand is done growing...I wouldn't do this right away but if this is an option I want to make sure I won't regret it.

  1. I'd advise against it. You can get a brand new LP Special II neck for $35, install it yourself and I think you'd be happy. Then, if you want to sell it later, you just put the old neck back on. I had the same problem, and am very happy with my LP II neck.

  2. if i were you, i wouldnt do that. while the neck is a bit thicker down there, the frets are closer together so it isnt hard to hold a chord there. not many songs have chords there, however. but if you plan on doing some kind of fast action picking with these frets, the size of the neck still wouldnt matter. this is probably just something that you would have to get used to, but eventually it would feel natural.

if your hands arent done growing yet, that is another reason why i would definately not consider doing this anytime soon. i have small hands and i dont have any problem playing between 12 and 14.

visit your guitar shop a few more times and get to know the guitar. give it some time and then make a decision. good luck!
