HELP.....how do i overcome my shyness?

Question

Next sunday i am going to my first girl scouts meeting,i am in 8th grade the rest of the girls range from grades 7-12(i am a cadet). i am very shy and i need to know how to break the ice with the other girls so that way i am not sitting in the off in the distance while everyone else is talking and having fun.

Don't worry. I'm pretty sure a really outgoing person will go up to you and say "Hi". Plus Girl Scouts usually involve lots of activities to do which means time to spend with all the other girls in making cookies, volunteering, etc. You'll make at least one friend in no time!

Many people are shy, and get along quite well. Try to immerse yourself in the moment, and ignore your shyness. Smile, look people in the eyes, and laugh a little. Try to ignore how you think you look feel or are acting, just enjoy yourself. Practice smiling in the mirror. When you go to the meeting, try to compliment someone on something, like "Wow, I really like your shoes," or "Those are neat earrings." When they respond, smile and say "Hi, my name is Brenna, what is yours?" If there is an activity, try to get involved and talk with the other people there. It may be rough at first, but you can do this.

If you are a reader, you might want to check out a book from your library called " How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. The book has some good pointers that you may want to try out.

Try to be over dramatic at first to get attention.  Like how Will Ferrel is in Kicking and Screaming.  If that doesn't work scratch that and just be funny around your other friends and just be yourself.  Don't be afraid to speak.  If you want to speak, then speak!  It's a free country.  Say whatever.  If you say stupid things, you'll get a stupid reputation.  So just talk maturely and you should be fine.
