HELP!!!!! my blackberry pearl is not working!!?

my friend gave it to me and it wasn't charged, so when i went to charge it a battery icon with a red slash showed up and will not go away...i have been charging it 4 about 45 minutes..

plz help!

    It's a bad battery. It just needs to be replaced.
