HELP needed with burning an avi file onto a dvd

Question

i have nero 6 (I think) and am trying to burn home vidoes to dvd so i can send them to grandparents to watch on their dvd player. when i "add" a file into nero when trying to add to dvd videos message says no compatible file found. how do i make my avi videos compatible? i am not very computer minded and need step by step guidance. thank you

stop using nero it sucks, use vso convertx or winavi, win is faster but convertx lets you do custom menus

ConvertXtoDVD much easier,(latest version  3 much faster conversion and burn ) insert blank DVD drag and drop file into program window click convert 700mb file converted  and burn't onto DVD in about 1hour .
