HELP on math problem!?

Question

In a football game, one team makes seven plays in the first quarter. The results of those plays are (in order); gain of 7 yards, gain of 2 yards, loss of 5 yards, loss of 12 yards, gain of 16 yards, gain of 8 yards, loss of 8 yards.

What is the overall gain (or loss) from all seven plays?

What is the average gain ( or loss) per play?

Give me the answer, and the way how to solve it, please. Need to clear these out. They did 7 plays, and on the second question, they want to know the average per play. The first one I think is 8 gained. This is a negative and positive question. Gained is Positive, and Loss is Negative. HELP

7+2-5-12+16+8 -8 = 25 -17 = 8 yards total

8/7 =  1 1/7 yards gain average

Cannot be determined from the information given.  Although you can add up all the numbers with appropriate signs (which comes to +8 yards), after the first four plays the team has lost the ball on downs and the yardage gained by the opposition is not stated.  (The first response contains an error.)

Average GAIN would be (sum of all plays)/7

Average Distance for each play would be (Sum of the absolute value of all plays)/7

7+7-5-12+16+8-8, which equals 13 yards.

The average would be found by taking that number 13, and dividing it by the number of plays.

13/7, which equals, if you round up, 1.9 yards.
