  1. I would have just have it done.  You don't want to mess with electricity.  I've never done this, but I would agree that you need shut off the MAIN POWER that feeds the house and breaker box!  You have to make sure the actual breaker box is no longer getting power.  Then, you would remove the fuse/breaker for that line.

Now here's the problem that no one else told you!  If there are other lights, outlets, etc on that line, now they are gone too.  There are likely other outlets on the exterior of the house, outdoor lights, etc that will need to be rewired to work.

  2. I think that some of the answers have some element of correctness. The person asking the question knows zero about electrical wiring or they would not have asked this question.

It is a terrible idea for someone who knows nothing about electricity to stick their hands into a service entrance panel (breaker box). They are not even capable enough to make sure the power to the box is off. There are several points inside the box that are still live, even if the main breaker are off.

Stay out of the box. Get someone who knows what they are doing. If they have to ask this question, they don't know enough to be doing this.

Electricity kills. This is not a project to learn on.

  3. Like most others have already said you need to remove the power to the cable by opening a breaker. I, on the other hand, would not open the main breaker, although that's one way you can do it. The problem with that though is that you kill the power to everything in the house as well as the shed. I would find out what feeder breaker is supplying the shed and would open that one. Make sure that the circuit is really dead either by using a voltage tester or use some small device (lamp, radio, etc.) that you can plug in. Just make sure that the device works before you test it on your "dead" circuit. Once the line is dead. Do what you want. I would also remove the wires from the feeder breaker. And as noted before if you don't understand what I'm saying, call an electrician.

  4. Ok one  final comment.  after you shutoff the main, remove the wiring to the garage...turn the main back on, and verify that you did "kill" the power to the garage.

  5. First shut off your main, follow the line into the breaker box and disconect it. pull it out, and it is done. If you don't understand what I just told you to do call a stinking electrician before you kill yourself.

  6. just make sure its not live

  7. Find where the cable enters the garage. Turn off the power.

cut the cable, and insulate the end.

Carry on demolishing, and find a permanent solution later.

  8. turn off all electric fromt he main switch in the house.

trace the cable back to were it is connected to the house supply.

then just remove the connection from there.

  9. disconect the wire from the house and then demo the garage

kill the power from the house and unhook the leads from the box

  10. I may not have been as blunt, but I agree with Splash.

IS the cable YOURS? Or was it supplied by and possibly installed by the service provider? I'd want to know if it was mine.

Certainly most things are possible, some not always wise or practical. Shutting off the main might help, and finding the cable as it runs to/from the main breaker box to the other structure would be a first step, after shutting off the power, but even at likely cost of $40 to $100, just for a pro to disconnect, seems a better opition to me. Once disconnected you can tear out the lines to the other structure as a DIY
