A Level Choices- History or Sociology?? Help plz?

i have decided to take four A levels and already decided on which three im going to take which is Biology Spanish and Psychology

Now im currently stuck on my fourth choice and its between History and Sociology, i didn't do History and GCSE level and would like to do a different subject although as a career i would like to go into social work and wondering if i should just do sociology so it would help me get into that field of work

if you have any experience with these subjects could you explain about them the pros and cons etc and which you would choose?

  1. Sociology is a waste of time, not taken seriously by University's or employers. Psychology is the same, so Id recommend History so at least your doing three decent ones.

  2. Sociology is not highly regarded by universities or employers. You're better off with History by a long shot.

Also, if you want to do Psychology at any higher level, don't take it for A-level, as you will not go into the subject at a deep enough level to understand the subject properly, and when it comes to university they'll tell you to forget everything you've learnt as it was somewhat false just to make it simplier at A-level

  3. History definitely. I done History at AS and I'm continuing it at A2 when we go back in a week. It's really good. My girlfriend done Sociology but dropped in because it was boring but I guess everyone has their own opinion. Two of my friends dropped Sociology as well but continued with History. :-)

Best advice is really to do a subject that your going to ENJOY. If you enjoy the subject you'll be more enthusiastic about it and actually want to work hard because you'll find it more interesting. If you choose a subject that bores you... you may fail. :-)

  4. Ignore the 'highly regarded' comments from others.

History has a reputation for being more academic then sociology. Both require essay writing and analytical skills.

Sociology links quite well with psychology and would be useful for social work.

Personally I think you should have a look at some social work courses at university and talk to the uni admissions and event the course tutors and ask what they recommend.

Overall you have a good mix of subjects whatever you choose. You have a language a science and a social science so you will have a wide choice of university courses if you decide against social work.
