okay so tomorrow im going to try to get my license and i know for a fact that they are gonna make me up or downhill park

but i forgot exactly how to do it

like i remember in drivers ed the steps for uphill were something like

*signal

*pull up to the curb

* turn the wheels aways from the curb

*put car in neutral till wheels hit the curb

* then put in park

* and pull up safety brake

and downhill the same except turn the wheels towards the curb

what im a little confused about is putting it in neutral, i know the wheels have to hit the curb but would it be the front or back wheels

because if its uphill parking then how would the front wheels hit the curb?

and how are you suppose to know when it hits the curb

like thru a mirror or just when you feel it

cause i dont want to go on the curb lol

  1. Hi, Best luck for your test. I would say in either uphill, your back wheels should be nearer to kerb, caustion: dont try to hit the kerb; look out from side mirror (you may need to slightly rotate your mirror downward). dont forget to put on your parking brake.

  2. Try this site, maybe it will help and good luck as well.

  3. if your driving a manual, after stopping and turning off car, make sure you put the gear into first if facing uphill and reverse when facing downhill, along with putting on the handbrake. This helps with keeping the car stationary, i think it takes some pressure off the handbrake.

  4. I guess it really depends on the law in your state. I live in Arizona and the way we are supposed to do it (or the way I passed when taking my test) is for uphill: do exactly as you said. Pull in as close as reasonable to the curb and turn your wheels away from it. Reason for this is that if your breaks fail, the car will roll over to the curb and will stop it, that would be why you need to roll over in nuetral before leaving the car. Otherwise it would gain momentum and just roll right over it! It works the same exact way for downhill. As for knowing when you've hit the curb...I know of no mirrors that will allow you to see your front tires. Just apply slight pressure on the breaks until you feel it.

  5. UP UP and AWAY.  When parking up hill start just like you would on a flat surface then turn your tires away from the curb then let the car fall back slowly until the wheels rest against the curb.  Put the car in park and you're set.

Down hill in essence do the opposite.  To do this you will have to pull in like a flat surface, turn the tires about 45 degrees away, pull out slightly then turn the wheels 45 toward the curb and let the tires rest against the curb and you're set.

  6. Remember, if uphill parking WITHOUT a curb, you turn the wheels right instead.
