I just recentyl became a vegetarian after much thought. I need to know how to stay healthy while being one. I don't really know anyone else who is so I can't get ideas from anyone. If you could like list some foods that would be good for me that would be great!

Also if you could put like what I need (proteins,calcium) and what to get it from.

And if you can give some recipes or meal ideas that would be great.

Thank you so much!!

  1. You actually need not be concerned with not getting enough protien.  the meat and dairy industry try to trick buyers into thinking it is vital when truly we can get all we need from other, animal-less, sources! :) nuts, beans, and peanut butter are high in protien. so if you have concern eat those yummy things! congradulations! i love to hear new people making these great transformations!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Two books to buy that are very informative for you:  Diet for a Small Planet, and Recipes for a Small Planet.  These came out, actually, over two decades ago but are awesome. You can get your protein from delicious foods, affordable foods, and still keep up your dedication to the vegetarian diet.  You should make sure you get all of your food groups in and that you are taking in sufficient vitamins and supplements also.

    Some things you should consider: Hommos, babaganoush, olives, yoghurt, lentils, red beans, white beans, pastas, avacadoes, oatmeal, mushrooms, falafel...do you exclude all dairy? if not, cheeses and eggs are terrific.

  3. Foods that contain no slaughtered animal or slaughter by products. The main foods are water, fruits, vegetables, nuts (almonds cashews, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc), beans (black, pinto, baked, kidney, etc), seeds (flax, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, hemp, etc), soy products (tofu, TVP, tempeh, fortified soy milk, miso, etc.) pulses, whole grains, quinoa, seiten, nutritional yeast, cereals, chickpea, seaweed, lentils, & vegetable, hemp, and flaxseed oils, plant meats, and plant milks. Brands: Amy's, Boca, Moringstar, Gardenburger, Tofurky.

  4. you will need to make sure you get enough protein, which you can get from eggs, diary products, nuts and nut products, beans, soy products and tofu, and some seeds. even cooked rice and broccoli have some protein in them.

    another thing you need to make sure you get is iron. you can get it from pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds, beans, split peas, tofu, nuts, raisins, dried peaches, prunes and apricots, and enriched bread and pasta.

    multigrain cheerios are good, they count towards your needed grain servings, have some required nutrients, and are definitely better for you than sugar-coated cereal.

  5. Congrats! Vegetarianism is easy to keep up if you have the right diet!

    Some high protein foods:

    Eggs and Dairy

        * Egg, large - 6 grams protein

        * Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams

        * Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams

        * Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams, check label

        * Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz

        * Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) – 7 or 8 grams per oz

        * Hard cheeses (Parmesan) – 10 grams per oz

    Beans (including soy)

        * Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein

        * Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams

        * Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams

        * Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans

        * Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein

        * Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams

    Nuts and Seeds

        * Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein

        * Almonds, ¼ cup – 8 grams

        * Peanuts, ¼ cup – 9 grams

        * Cashews, ¼ cup – 5 grams

        * Pecans, ¼ cup – 2.5 grams

        * Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup – 6 grams

        * Pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup – 19 grams

        * Flax seeds – ¼ cup – 8 grams

    Being a vegetarian usually makes it harder to get protein, so make sure to eat more of these foods, along with your daily vegetables and fruits. As for recipes: http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/Everyday-C...
