Question:

HELP with the poem "Cousin Kate"!?

My teacher has give us a copy of the poem, where the second verse goes like this:

"He lured me to his palace home-

Woe is me for joy thereof-

To lead a shameless shameful life

His plaything and his love,

He wore me like a silken glove;

So now I moan an unclean thing,

Who might have been a dove."

But I was told that researching information on the internet could help my essay, so I researched the poem but the second verse is different.

Like so:

"He lured me to his palace home -

Woe's me for joy thereof-

To lead a shameless shameful life,

His plaything and his love.

He wore me like a silken knot,

He changed me like a glove;

So now I moan, an unclean thing,

Who might have been a dove."

So which one is right? I can't annotate "He wore me like a silken glove" if it's the wrong line, because then I won't get marks for it. Should I go with the internet one?

Also, what is a silken knot???

Thanks.

  1. Your teacher has given you an incorrect excerpt of Christina Rosseti's poem. Use the correct version for accuracy and add a note to that effect at the end of your work. You cannot be marked down for being thorough. If you are then your teacher is a muppet!

  2. If I was you, and I was once as I did this last year - go with the one that your teacher gave you because you can't be told off for being given the wrong information... if you understand me.

    Also the first one sounds more familiar....
