  1. First, you need some help with your keyboard, as the shift key appears to be stuck.

Your converter box will not work with Comcast.

DTV is (supposed to) give a better picture, and more channels for over the air reception. But it is completely redundant if you are using Comcast, as it already uses digital technology, has plenty of channels and its own type of box.

  2. Comcast is already providing you the functions of the converter box in their service.  They take the digital signals and convert some of them to analog so all TV's can display them.

The rest they process in digital QAM which is different than  over the air digital (thus the need for their converter box and NOT the over the air converter box the government is providing coupons for)  That box will NOT work with cable TV

You can split the signal and get the basic analog cable on your set NO converter box needed.

Digital provides a better signal quality. Digital TV allow 4 - 5 channels to be broadcast in the space now occupied by one channel. Cable TV uses 8 to 1. There is less co-channel interference.

The BIG reason for digital conversion is that less bandwidth is needed for broadcasting and the remaining frequencies can be used for other services like cell phone Internet, and 2 way emergency radio traffic.

  3. The FCC is mandating that cable keeps analog until 2012.  This 2009 transition is affecting over the air stations only.  If you have any TVs on rabbit ears that do not have digital tuners, I suggest purchasing the converter box now.
