  1. Well, first I hope you got the right definition for "movement".  There is a school of music, called the Venice Movement.

But, I think your assignment is related to how geography affected the growth of Venice as a key economic power in Italy.

Italy (during the late Middle Ages) was a collection of "city states", until unified in the last 1800's.  It was one of last European countries to modernize and unify.

Venice has always been a very beautiful city, which attracted many artists during the Renaissance.  It's many canals served as major transportation links, much like our modern roads and railroads do.

Because of a good harbor, and world trade, merchants in Venice got extra rich.  That allowed them to economically control other cities or leaders in other places, including competition with the Papal States.

Yes, your notes are right.  If you cannot transport goods and ideas, then you become isolated, and have less power in the world market place. Venice had an excellent advantage with it's waterways, and port on the Mediterranean Sea.

  2. this is a cool project from a teachers perspective and probably a pain in the class from yours.

if you go back at least 500 years, you will see that venice was a MAJOR crossroads of comm'l traffic and for a time they controlled the spice trade, and much of the asian silk, a la marco polo. ergo, wealth flowed into this area. the wealthy were patrons of the arts, and religion. the medici's are an excellent case in point

the med's had several popes in the family, and other nnotables(sp?).

so what they said went, and helped shape the art movement of the times. they controlled many luxuries, so if you were in with them, you could get things others couldn't.

they were in the courts (kings)  and courts (judiciary).

i dont know where you live, but ny, singapore, or brussels, harbors are in a similar position as venice then.

i am a better teacher than typist.

if you go back further, look at the Phoenicians and the romans and how they controlled the Mediterranean,
