  1. Use chemicals to eliminate the weeds.

  2. You have two problems:

    1. Above ground growth.  With a large area to deal with, you can either hire machinery or labour to solve the problem. Doing it by hand-tools is very labour intensive. You could try getting up a weed-bashing party of friends - bbq, beer, wine, food AFTER the weeds have been decimated, or a troop of  scouts by financial arrangement with them and the scoutmaster.

    2. Roots and secondary growth. One or two applications of Roundup or a similar translocated weedkiller will help to eliminate most weeds. You will still need to dig them out to get the soil in good condition.  If you cannot manage all of the garden at once, get some old carpets  ( use your local Yahoo Freecycle group) or buy woven groundcover from a local garden centre to cover the ground and suppress weed germination whilst you are working on the other portion .

Good luck and hope the party's a success !

  3. get a couple of goats. it'll do the work for you. hahaha,

  4. I would do all of the above.  Dig em out, use chemicals, and returf.  Have fun!  Wish I was there to help.  Might want to hire landscapers!

  5. id just dig it up and re-turf it. turf is only about £2-£2.50 a roll. and it'll be worth the effort. with some pretty plants along the border it'll look nice!!! buy a nice little bench or somethin too.

  6. Aside from hand digging and/or mowing the area, the only other resort is to use chemicals to eliminate the weeds.
