Ways to hold a pencil?

My 7 year old sister has a very odd and wierd way of holding a pencil (or pen, crayon, etc . . ), that makes her writing difficult and messy, and her hand starts hurting soon. Are there different ways to hold a pencil, different grips, etc . . so that I can find one she is comfortable with? She has been writing for about 2.5 - 3 year, but it is becoming more of a problem now.

She has no learning difficulties or anything.

  1. get a pencil grip thats shaped like a triangle so she has no choice but to hold it the right way

    hope i helped(:

  2. ignore it and don't pick this one thing to fight about.  school and teachers will help encourage her to hold it better if needed.

  3. If her writing is difficult and her hand starts hurting, she may need to strengthen her fine motor skills in her hands.  Have her play with clay or Play-doh.  She can have fun with it and it will exercise her hands and fingers when she's molding the clay into different shapes.

  4. The occupational therapist who works with our school helps out on these issues all the time. Very often, it seems the problem can be corrected by using special grips that are attached to the pencil. If the issue is very severe, the OT might get involved and do therapy. Possibly you want to see if your parents' insurance will cover a visit to an OT. That person can then make suggestions which should resolve the problem. Another avenue would be to go through your school, but depending on the district, that can be time consuming and they may not get involved unless the child has some other disability. Good luck =).

  5. maybe the trouble is she is using the wrong hand. is she a lefty using her right hand? cuz i kno that can cause discomfort...

    good luck!
