  1. Installing a cable system is incredibly expensive.

It's not unlike phone and power systems, where you usually only have one company owning the distribution system.

Verizon is bucking the trend and installing their system in various parts of the country.

One reason they feel they can make money doing this is the advent of HDTV. Verizon is installing a completely optical system which can carry many more HD channels than most of the old cable systems it will be competing with.

assuming they are not coming into your area, your only choice is satellite service from Dish or Direct TV.

  2. Typically cable companies are licensed by your city through "franchise agreements".  It is not unusual to only have one choice although that is changing a bit.

You might want to look at Dish Network and DirecTV.  They both have web sites with channel line up packages so you could see which one(s) have the channels you want and the price of the packages.

I've been a Dish Network customer for nine years and would not go back to Time Warner.  Dish is less expensive, more reliable and doesn't keep raising rates.
