Question:

HELp! Abandoned kittys, need help

These kittens that I found abandoned r full of fleas. I would really love to foster them myself, but can not afford a vet bill for four kittens. I have called the humane society and other kitty rescues and no one is taking any kittens. All they do is refer me to animal control who has a VERY high rate of killing the animals, even kittens and puppies. I live in the Jacksonville Fl area and in desperate need. The flea comb that I have tried is not working well at all b/c the kittens r so small. I have tried bathing them, some fleas die, most do not. Does anyone know of any no kill shelters or even fosters parents that can help me. I tried to do a good thing, and I am so scared I'm may have made their situation worse.

  1. try  dusting  them  wth  powdered  herbs  (rosemary  ,lavender, sage, eucalyptus) .and  let  them  be  outside  fr  a while  .  the  fleas  do  not  like  the  smell and  will  push  off!

  2. try buying som shampoos or liquid soap 4 kittens before u sell them. mann,.. i wish i could have 1 of da kittens but i live in a different place.:(

  3. Most no-kill shelters and rescues pull animals from kill pounds. They rarely take in animals from individuals. You can ask your vet if they know any people who foster kittens. The problem is there are so many homeless animals and not enough people who are willing to take them in. Since you've bathed already, you can't bathe again for a week or you can make them really sick. The flea comb will remove any fleas but it must be done daily for a few days to see results. I understand your frustration but if these kittens don't get rid of the fleas, they could develop a potentially fatal anemia. If you can, try finding homes for them yourself. Be careful who you give them to so the don't wind up in evil hands. I'm sorry the situation is so grim. Maybe someday the world will see that spay/neuter is a must if we are ever going to get a handle on the crisis of pet overpopulation.

Eucalyptus is toxic to cats as is garlic and most other home remedies people might suggest. The best I can do for a safe treatment is recommend getting Capstar or Revolution if the kittens are at least 5 weeks old.

  4. Try calling a vet and asking advice over the phone.  Tell them your situation, and ask what is the best thing to do for fleas...that you can't afford to bring them in.  There must be an inexpensive way to remove the fleas, at least for the time being.  They may be able to help you find home for them, also.  Possibly they may have a bulletin board you could put a flyer on about the kittens.  We have the same problem here with two kittens, so I know what you're going through.  No you aren't doing the wrong thing, bless you for caring and trying to help.
