i already know what a course will cost, but what about equipment?

I will check out ebay for some and purchase my goggles and mouth piece new, flippers new as well. I also realize i dont have to go crazy and buy stuff because alot can be rented.

basically i am looking for advice, stories and wisdom?

  1. You shouldn't start renting equipment until a couple of months.  Diving once underwater doesn't tell you if you are comfortable diving deeper or under different circumstances. Equipment is costly and it is a big commitment.  Everything can be rented and for a cheap price if you go to the right shop.  Also, if you do decide to purchase gear, remember to purchase a mask, not goggles. Otherwise, you may have some problems; )  One other thing is that it's def better to try equipment on in a scuba store where qualified professionals can tell you if the fit is right. If you know what sizes and brands are good for you after seeing them, then it's time to check on ebay. GOOD LUCK!<3

  2. Congratulations on taking the plunge.  Scuba is a great sport.

The one thing you need to consider when getting mask fins and snorkel is comfort and fit.

Scuba masks (with the exception of one or two types) have to have tempered glass lenses.  They will have this printed on the lenses themselves.  Get a mask that has a silicone skirt rather than rubber because it will fit better and last longer. As far as fit check the link number one for a video on how to fit a mask to your face. I also added a link on fins Link 2) and snorkels (Link 3) as well.

When you start thinking about getting your scuba equipment, make sure that you opt for gear made with women in mind (there is a difference).

The fourth link will give you an idea about pricing on scuba gear.  When you do purchase your scuba gear make sure that it is from a manufacturer authorized dealer for warranty reasons.  It is good to verify a company's authorization by going to the manufacturer site and seeing if they are listed on it.

I have been diving for going on 26 years now and teaching for 25 of those 26. With 78 percent of the earth covered in water there is a lot out there to enjoy.
