I have been collecting The Hohner 900 series for quite a while. It is true that production switched to korea later in the series. Even the Japanese models in the lower model numbers like 905,910,920 were Laminated back and sides. The best way to see if you have an all solid wood acoustic is too, look inside the guitar at the sides and you will see small bracing about every 4 to 6 inches, from the top to the back all the way around the inside. Sometimes this bracing only consists of a nylon strap as well. This helps to prevent side splits as well as hold the guitar togeter if the sides do split. The normal bracing under the top and inside on the back is what stablizes the top and back. The best way for me to tell the difference between the Koean and Japanese models is the style of the Diamond volute on the back of the headstock. The shape of the volute and bottom corners of the headstock are easy to distiguishe once you know what you are looking for. My Korean 940 is all solid and it sounds incredible. My japanese 905 sounds just as good if not a little more Thunder! Kaboom! You can't go wrong with these Guitars. The cool part is the Guild copy bridge on them. The used it on other models as well.
Go to Tim's Acoustics on Reverb if you are looking for some cool Japanese guitars!

UP DATE I have more information on these guitars and I would like to correct this. The ( K ) stamped on the neck block doesn't constitute that the guitar was manufactured in Korea. Gathering information on these guitars has been a long and interesting job, with very little information available. It is my understanding that the production dates still remain the same. The HG being from 1978 to the end of 1980 and the G series from 1981-85. Although, they may have changed facilities it appears that the production remained in Japan for both series. I'm sorry for the misinformation. Acurate information has been difficult to obtain.
