  1. It is aircraft fuel - you can use it in your private jet.

  2. A huge variety of indoor lamps.  These are safer and more effective than candles if the power goes off.

Small stoves may use kero as a fuel.  These usually have a fuel container that is pumped up with a built in pump.  The fuel is forced into a "generator" which you have to pre-heat with a  small amount of alcohol.  Slightly noisy but gives a hot blue flame and little or no odour.  "Primus" was the most common brand, usually made in Sweden. There are or were wick type kerosene stoves but these were never popular as they smelt strongly and sometimes the odour got into food.

The same principle was used for blowtorches for stripping old paint, also powerful lamps that used a rare-earth oxide mantel.  Many brands, usually English or European made.  Coleman did make a few kero models, but most US lamps of this type used gasoline and the fuels MUST not be interchanged.

Heaters using this principle were once used, though now most kerosene burning heaters use wicks.

Special incubators were once made to keep chicken eggs warm, these used a small burner like that on a lamp to heat the incubator.

You can prevent or reduce frost in a small greenhouse with a few hurricane type lanterns burning overnight inside the greenhouse and placed on the floor / ground.

As a fuel for kerosene refrigerators which work better than a lot of people think (I know of a case where one froze four  cartons of beer solid in three days).

It is also a good degreaser for mechanical use. Works well on bicycle chains and greasy car parts.

If you have a water tank and a mosquito problem, a half cup of kerosene in the tank will float on the surface and kill the mosquito larvae when they come up for air.  It will also prevent mosquitoes from laying more eggs in the water.

Low odour or reduced odour kero has been used for dissolving pesticides, also for removing wax from some types of non-porous flooring.  (Definitely not timber).

Home made firelighters.  Put about two tablespoons of kero in a sealable container, fill the container with dry twigs, seal  and shake.  Leave the lid on. A couple of the twigs will start a fire in a stove or fireplace of for a barbecue at a picnic spot.

It is not a good solvent for oil based paints as it does not evaporate quickly.  A special solvent called mineral turpentine should be used.

Lighting or home kerosene can be used instead of Diesel fuel in Diesel motors though you will have tax problems in some countries.  It may not have quite as good a lubricating value or "cetane rating" as proper Diesel fuel and could wear out the injector pumps quickly.

Kerosene was widely available from about 1860 until fairly recently and was put to a lot of uses in addition to fueling lamps.

  3. Making big fires

  4. It is a very good degreaser (automobile parts, bicycle parts, etc.) and paintbrush cleaner (latex paint).

  5. Kerosene is a good cleaner for fishing reels, guns and metal parts... but a lubricant is needed afterwards to prevent rust.
