Question:

HI. I just bought a new desktop computer with Vista loaded.?

We installed the drivers for our printer and the new computer and the printer communicate perfectly. However, our laptops now cannot communicate with the printer. Windows XP is the laptops' OS. How do I set up my home network so that the laptops can command print jobs using our wireless network? The desktop is an ethernet connection. The network was working great until our old desktop crashed and burned; it was running XP.How do I configure this? Does it make a difference that the new desktop is running Vista and the laptops are still on XP?

Thanks for any help, this is driving me crazy!

  1. Vista and XP aren't able to be networked together. We have that same problem at my boyfriend's house, where his desktop is Vista and notebook was XP. Now that he's using my laptop, which is Vista, everything works fine. It's a stupid glitch Microsoft hasn't fixed yet.

  2. lol...do you have router first? you need something to 'route' over or send to your laptop

if you have a route...setup a home network by the cd they provide (its easy and simple) and load up your printer cd or read the manual to connect

or more simply, if your printer have a usb cord then you can just plug it in

and Vista and XP shouldnt and havent had problems with each other

sorry if this didnt answer your question and im confused (at least I think I am of wut your asking...Printer wireless? right?)

  3. yeah, when you got the printer with Vista your hostname and workgroup changed (just different default settings, that's all).  you need to mess with the XP laptops to make it work.

but it is possible.  we have Vista on here and my dad has a laptop with XP.  it works fine.

  4. Have you added your new desktop computer to your network? Vista and XP computers work well together on networks if they are all on the same network. If you are using your desktop as a print server you may need to reinstall the printer in the XP machines. The laptops are still looking for your old computer. Just uninstall the printer on the laptop and reinstall it.
