HIV positive mother?

what do u think of HIV+ women who insist on having a child despite knowing the high possiblity of the child contracting the disease?

I don't think positively of them, that's for sure.

The antiretrovirals are not cheap.

Most times these people are on welfare, so it isn't this HIV+ mother who will be paying for the drugs, but the taxpayer.

What high possibility? With careful management, infection rates for babies born to HIV+ mothers is as low as 2%.  Antiretroviral drugs (which the mother would be getting ANYWAY), caeserian deliveries (which in the US in particular appears to be de rigeur) and no breastfeeding all work to greatly reduce the risk of passing the HIV virus from mother to child.

As to whether or not an HIV+ woman should have a child - who are you to say? With treatment and life expectancy seeing HIV+ women become grandmothers how is it any more selfish than a smoker, drinker, morbidly obese woman or one with MS having a baby? Or maybe a deaf one, a blind one? Just who do YOU think should be "allowed" to have children? Do you have some heirarchy of "deserving" sick and "undeserving" sick in mind? Do you think only women who contracted HIV through blood transfusions should be permitted to have babies? Have you heard of Hitler?

I don't think they fully understand the risks and consequences of their decisions. I would suggest:

(a) education

(b) counselling

(c) adoption, instead of giving birth naturally.

I am sure these woman have a lot of love to give and they want to share their lives with children of their own, but if they knew what it kind of impact the virus would have on the child's own life, hopefully they would re-consider.

selfish...because they know the child will only suffer a great deal...despite that knowledge they still wanna have one...
