  1. Used by the Royal Navy it stands for "Her Majesty's Ship".

  2. It is used in British Navy. HMS = Her Majesty's Service.

When Prince what's-his-name takes over, it will stay the same, however it will be His Majesty's Service.

(it is commonly confused with "Her Majesty's Ship" however it is actually Service, as the ship is in the service of His/Her Majesty.)

  3. "HMS" has been used by the British Navy for

hundreds of years. Depending on who was ruling

the country at that time, the "H" would stand for

either "His", or "Her", Majesties Ship.

  4. Her Majesty Ship (British)

  5. Service???

    Confusion???

    That guy is Confused...

Without question it is "Her Majesty's Ship" or "His Majesty's Ship" depending on the gender of the current Monarch. At present obviously, it is female possessive.

It refers to the fact that it is a ship...it refers possessively to the Crown...end of story.

Perhaps he was thinking of a James Bond movie! hehe

  6. The United Kingdom uses this abbreviation for His (or Her) Majesty's Ship to signify that it belongs to the government.  Most notably Royal Navy ships and some of Her Majesty's Coastguard ships use the prefix HMS.

    Similar prefixes include

        * Canada: HMCS – Her Majesty's Canadian Ship

        * Australia: HMAS – Her Majesty's Australian Ship

        * New Zealand:HMNZS – Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship

        * Bahamas: HMBS – Her Majesty's Bahamian Ship

        * Bermuda: HMBS – Her Majesty's Bermudian Ship

        * Papua New Guinea: HMPNGS – Her Majesty's Papua New Guinea Ship

        * Jamaica: HMJS – Her Majesty's Jamaican Ship

        * Tuvalu: HMTS – Her Majesty's Tuvaluan Ship

  7. "Ship" Vs "Service". My understanding, albeit only based on 35 years experience in the Royal Australian Air Force, is that the "S" stands for "Ship", not 'Service'.

  8. Her Majesty's Ship
