the globe was rebuilt and reopened in England in 1990s. in what ways would a performance in the globe theatre in the 1600s differ from a performance in the globe theatre today?

  1. The facilities have to conform to modern safety standards, and you don't have share the theatre with a lot of Elizabethan groundlings so it is all a bit less smelly (and indeed raucous) than the original might have been. Also you would not have girly actors playing the female roles (all roles were played by men). Still, quite an experience, especially when the weather is fine. I suppose also there is not quite the expectation that it might burn to the ground like the original (when a canon shot during a perfomance of Henry VII ignited the thatched roof)


  2. No central heating and air, no safety measures such as railing, no fire detectors, the list goes on and on.  Also, keep in mind, during the time when plays were performed at the Globe during the 1600's only men could be actors.  Thus, men played the female parts.
