I am a young man straight out of high school. I made a 62 on my ASVAB test and at first had my mind set on going to the Marines; but after i did a little diging i decided to go to the Navy. but the all kinds of recruiters started calling my house and now its a dead tie between the Army and the Air Force. The Air force (guy) made the air force sound great like not having to pay for anything and them paying me to go through basic traing. But now the army guy said they do all that and then some like paying me just to go to school and $1,000 every month just for graduating . That sounds great but how do i koe there not a catch or its all some kind of trick. Please SOMEONE Help me and fast i'm a SEnior this year and will needa n answer before feb 5, 2009?

  1. Air Force or Army?  GO NAVY!

  2. ARMY

  3. dude, every military branch offers to pay for school, I personally am joining the marines. but all the branches of military are good, if you want combat then definitely join the marines. i think army would be my last choice, they get deployed over seas for along time.

  4. Air Force will treat you better and take care of you, the Air Force however now has a harder basic and will getting longer and harder in november, the Army apparently have made basic softer and the Drill Sergants are encouraged not to yell so much anymore

  5. Really, it comes to what you want. You will get the same benefits and don't let the recruiters make decisions for you. They are kinda like salesmen, they will make everything sound great.

Don't do it for the money. What they give you usually gets spent in a few weeks or month, then you are stuck with a job you may not like.

If you like the military, being a soldier, seeing some action...Go Army

If you like planes, electronics, and a less hardcore lifestyle, go Air Force.

The Army gives you more job choices.

The Air Force you have less say but a lot more of their jobs train you for civilian careers.

  6. Just join the Marine Corps infantry. You'll be happy you did.

Everything has a catch and most recruiters are complete liars. If you join the infantry at least you know what you're getting into.

  7. They are both good.

If you were looking at the Marines initially, you probably won't be happy with the Air Force, it is the least 'military' of all of the branches.  Either way the benefits are very similar.

The Army is bigger, and tends to have more job openings, with better promotion possibilities.

I would rather be an E-7 in the Army, living on an Army post; than an E-5 in the Air Force, living in their 'better' conditions.

It really is not fair to compare the Army across the board to the Air Force across the board.  Obviously an Army Infantryman is going to live a rougher life than an Air Force Aviation Operations guy.  The life of an aircraft mechanic is similar in both services, likewise with computer techs, intelligence analysts, etc.

You will definitely get the biggest bonus in the Army.

Bottom line:  Join for the job you want, and can see yourself doing for the next 3-6 years.  Talk to someone who actually does that job in the Military. (even if its a recruiter, they will generally tell you the truth about their own job, they may have to work with you in the future)

    edit:

Additionally, I would rather work for an Army NCO who has been selected based upon his or her job performance, than an Air Force NCO who has been selected based upon test scores.  I will NEVER work for an Air Force officer again, if I can help it.

  8. Its all up to what you are interested in. Both offer excellent incentives, however, the army MAY offer more. For example, bonuses and the such. Just make sure you get it on paper when you sign your contract. Honestly both are a great choice, you are in the same situation i was in. Same score as well, but what put me over the top was my language tests. After all that, I decided to go to the Army, I felt that is where I needed to be. So ultimately bro, the decision is yours, and what you feel to be best. There really IS no catch since you did get a 62 you past the 50 on the asvab qualification for the Army so you most likely will qualify for most incentives, like i said before make sure you get it on paper. If you have anymore questions ask me.

Also if you do like the hotel rooms go AF, but word for the wise, for men it will not always be in a hotel, you have a risk of being deployed and being in the same tents as the Army guys.

Seeing what people say, some people are comparing completely different jobs. But Airforce Security Forces will receive similar treatment as the Military Police, it all depends what job you pick. You pick a tech job in the airforce you will be in an air conditioned room in the army you pick the same job, same accomodations. Like one guy said down there it is not fair to compare an infantrymans experience to an avionics  man.

  9. The Army will offer you more incentives.  The Air Force doesn't... because it's a better quality of life (I don't think anyone can argue that)... so they don't need people as badly as the other services.

The Air Force is the better answer for if you want a good quality of life, if you plan on staying in, if you plan on having a family... deployments are shorter, and lets be honest, although we work hard in the USAF, I know I get better treatment than the Army guys.  And I'm very happy with my decision, and I love my job, and I'm interested in air superiority, so it suits me.  If you're into ground action, boots stomping on the ground, tents (instead of USAF hotel rooms) go Army.

    Good luck

Edit:  It is harder to gain ranks in the Air Force.  BUT you just have to try harder, and excel in your service.  I would rather have worked hard to be a E-7 in the Air Force, than be a E-7 in the Army.  You're not going to get things handed to you in the Air Force (past E-4 that is).  You have to take it.

  10. I served almost 4 years in the Air Force and am currently an af spouse and though it has it's ups and downs, it's way better than the Army.  The Army treats its people horrible.  Both services are likely to lie to you to get you to join, but that would be any service!  The Army is DESPERATE to get people in, so just keep that in mind--ie they will tell you anything and offer you all sorts of money but you really have to take a step back and think if that money would be worth it in a couple of years or even a couple of months.  There is no real way of knowing if there is a trick or catch until you get through basic and are on your way to your job.

any service will pay you to go to school.  as long as you serve 3 years you will get the gibill.  and the gibill is going to be freakin' sweet by the time you get out!  currently it's not so great, but next year it changes.

it all boils down to you and how you like to be treated.  the army will use and abuse you and make you believe its fun.  the air force is the closest thing to a civilian job you can get...depending on your job.  i totally think joining the service can be smart--a great way to not have to pay for college.  so many benefits and the like--but it's a sacrifice on many levels and it's not for everyone.
