  1. Well it doesn't matter about their height as to how long and hard they can go...a little Shetland pony who is schooled every day could just go and go and go but then a big thoroughbred who gets little to no training is going to be worn out in a hurry, just like people, see?

You could always ring your local vet, you don't have to make an appointment and spend money, just talk to them, they are usually happy to help. Don't worry about feeling stupid for asking questions!! =)

  2. like everyone said, it is not the height but shape. if you ride him an hour or 2 at first you will know what he can take. horses love to get out and go for rides. they like change of scenery, affection, being brushed, and companionship. my horses would come running when they heard my car get home.  they are so loving and playful, loyal and fun. congrats.

there is a product out there for horses called "well horse." it is awesome. google it, research it, it is all natural from the rain forest.  it is so great you can use it on yourself even. also there is thrush off. good luck and give your horse a hug for me.

  3. Thrush can be treated easily with various medications from tack shops such as Koppertox. Height has no matter, it is your horses fitness, ride him until he has a light sweat if you just want to go lightly or until he is sweaty.

  4. well some of these ppl are being rude. im inexperienced and have taken lessons for 6 months and my horse is perfectly fine. but ive had my horse since birth o well. well the size doesnt matter all that much. its the breed of horse and his physical fitness.

just get some medicine from the local store.

and ppl we r supposed to b ansering not asking. so dont ask her if she should alredy kno this. thats the whole point of her coming here. and atleast shes not just pretending she knows it all she came here to find out. i dnt kno all the horse stuff. heck i just learnd how to measure a horse by hands and i have had a horse all my life.

  5. first question:depends on the horses fitness not their height.

second question:you need to treat it with thrush buster(medication u can get @ ur local tack store.

if you have a horse shouldnt u know this stuff already...in my opinion i think u have rushed into ownership =P

only a year? wow i remember wen i first started riding and i wanted my own horse but never got one and looking back now i glad i didnt get one because i would have ruined him with my inexperience.

  6. How long you can ride before your horse gets tired depends on what type of work he's been doing and how long he's been doing it.  A dressage horse with several years of training will not tire easily, nor will most horses who have been in training or ridden for pleasure on a regular basis.

If he's in good weight, and has been getting regular exercise prior to you getting him you can ride for quite a while, sometimes several hours.  If all you're doing is walking, chances are he'll never get tired.

For the thrush, you can buy the expensive product to use, or for a mild case like his try a little bleach and water mixed together about half and half, a little more water than bleach is ok though (i've used this remedy dozens of times and only one horse didn't respond to this treatment).  Use an old rinsed out dish soap bottle to mix it in and just squirt a little on the affected area a couple times a day and make sure you keep his feet picked out.

  7. Thrush eats away at the horse's frog area and hoof tissue and will become very bad and cause serious lameness if not treated promptly and properly and it will be constantly reoccurring if you don't clean up the unsanitary condition causing it. It's caused by standing in manure and unsanitary filthy footing and the first thing you need to do is get that cleaned up, whether it is filthy footing in the stall or paddock, and then, if you cannot do it properly and thoroughly yourself, you should get a farrier to pick and thoroughly clean and sanitize the frog area of his hooves and treat his hooves with thrush medication. Thrush Buster, Kopertox, and Hooflex Thrush Remedy are the most commonly used medications to treat thrush but Thrush Buster has a reputation for being the best.

  8. a year is not very long before buying a horse. are you at a stable or in your backyard?

  9. It depends on the horse on how long you can ride him.  And he will slowly build his endurance to where you can ride him longer and longer.

And for the thrush problem, my horse gets it all the time.  I just pick out her hooves daily, and then spray water with a LITTLE bit of bleach added to it.  Clears it right up.

  10. is the thrush bad on his feet? you can get some stuff from Tractor Supply or you can wash his feet in bleach water. Also you can put some or the bleach in his drinking water. if very large tank about 1/2 to a cup. if just small bucket then a cup full every two or three days

you can ride him all day as long as it is not to hot or you cool him off some. He has alot of riding day left in him. But it is always best to get a vet. and ask them about your horse after them see him. Good Luck and have fun.

  11. Well, a horse is just like a person in that respect. He needs to build up strength and endurance through exercise the same way you would if you were say, running track. So just play it by ear and see how he does. If he seems really worn out or grouchy next time you go to catch him, take it a little easier next time. Build him up slowly over time until he can ride as long as you want.

That being said, wild horses walk miless everry day . Horsesa are nott as fragile as people imagine. So don't worry too much about this. I doubt you ride him nearly  long enough to cause that kind of stress.

  12. take it slow and build up his workouts gradually, for thrush mix 1 part clorox to 8 parts water spray on after cleaning the hoof twice a day, it will be gone in no time, Congrats!!

  13. congradulations on your first horse friend.

you are a beginner and need to continue your lessons and have an expierienced person work with you so that you can learn more

You can get medication for thrush at the local tack store and should you not be able to find it there - call your vet

if  your horse is in good shape you should be able to ride him for quite awhile before he gets tired.

I have 4 horses and they can outlast me when it comes to riding - they can go for hours with a continuouse workout
