My friend and I were discussing Trotters. We wondered if there is a difference in the breeding of those you see here in the UK to the French Trotter and the American Standard Bred. Are they all distinct breeds?

Links to websites would be welcomed.

Please, only respond if you have knowledge of this subject not to say you didn't know they existed or something else vacuous

  1. Standardbreds are all the same. Otherwise horses from here (US) wouldn't be allowed to compete in the big races in Sweden etc.

    here is a good link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standardbre...

  2. to my understanding they are, many horses from New Zeland are competing here currently and they can be found in the running lines by their name followed by a capitol N, as Im sure if you followed many of the american standardbred horses their origins come from overseas generations back...the NZ breds are held in high regard as soon as they get here (as evidenced by betting lines, which reflects on performances of other pacer/trotting horses that get here being successful right away)...its a kick in the *** driving a harness racer, Ive worked one for a friend of mine who is a trainer/driver/owner in the sacramento ca. area competing at Cal Expo

  3. No, a standardred is a trotter, but not all trotters are standardbred.  the term "Standardbred" used to desribe the breed came into use in the late 1800's because then to be registered, a member of the breed had to trot a mile within a standard of 2.5 minutes.  (Now they trot much faster, under 2 minutes.)

In America, both trotters and pacers race, with pacers being slightly faster.  In Europe, only trotters race.   American Standardbreds are considered faster than Orlov Trotters and French Trotters.  Orlovs are considered smoother than Standardbreds I think.  Russian Trotters as a breed resulted from crossing Orlovs and Standardbred.  Modern French Trotters have some Standardbred  blood in them to give them more speed.
