  1. We need to know if you own or rent.

If you own - its your house and you can do what ever you want with it.

If you rent - nobody can move in without the approval of the landlord or you all will get evicted. And they do not have to allow any additional tenants.

  2. If you’re the owner, you can allow people to live with you rent free. However, you need to check occupancy laws in your area; Google [city or county name] + occupancy laws.  There are definitely areas that limit the number of unrelated people who share a dwelling.

However, if you’re leasing, you need to review the terms of your lease to find out at what point (usually a # of days) a guest becomes an occupant. Your lease probably also spells out what you need to do if you’ll have someone staying long term and what happens if you fail to notify your landlord of this.

  3. Occupancy law in the US is usually 2 people over 12 months of age per legal bedroom.

If you own the house you can fill it to legal capacity without any ones permission.

If you are a renter you can not, you need the landlords permission and the landlord needs identification and an application for every adult over 18 years of age.   He only needs names and ages of anyone under 18, no application.

  4. Check your local housing codes and lease. Some leases forbid roommates without being approved. Some local laws restrict unrelated people living together.

  5. Firstly, do you rent?  If you own, you do what you want, unless you're in an association.

    .

  6. Your lease limits that.
