  1. I think you mean how has aircraft evolved in the past 20 years.  In terms of safety it has taken HUGE leaps.

To begin with just with the advances in materials used to build aircraft the aircraft are more reliable, stronger, and therefore more safer.

Procedures that airlines use and the Federal Laws pertaining to flight in the US called the FARs (Federal Aviation Regulation) or CFRs (Code of Fedreal Regulations) have been tweeked and set in place to first and foremost to make flying safer.

An example of this system in action would be the TWA flight 800 disaster.  The NTSB concluded that there was a wireing fault.  (Whether we believe this is the cause or not just follow what happens)  The Federal Aviation Association (FAA) sends out what is called an Airworthiness Directive (AD) which sets out a procedure that must be accomplished in acordance with the AD.  In this case the planes were immediately grounded until the wire bundles were throughly inspected and fixed if they were bad.

The ongoing investigation made by everyone in the aviation industry from the FAA to the pilots make modern flying safer than it was 20 years ago.
