Chapter 1 Summary

Main Characters:

Old Major

What took place?

In the first chapter of Animal Farm, the reader is introduced to the animals of the farm. He or she also briefly reads about the owners of the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Jones. The chapter is mainly about a meeting held by Old Major. Every animal of the farm attends because the boar is so well respected by all of them. The meeting was held to discuss a dream Old Major had but the dream was pushed aside for a moment while Old Major discusses his thoughts. He thinks that life without man would be perfect for animals. He talks about how humans are greedy and do not have any reason to take control of the animals seeing as how humans contribute nothing to the lives of animals. The boar thinks that each animal gives so much to man but get little to nothing in return. He believes that one day the animals will get rid of man and get to keep the products that they work so hard to create, such as cows keeping their milk and horses keeping the food that grows in the land they tilled. The chapter ends by Old Major telling his dream which only adds to the excitement of freedom. His dream was about a world without man and a song which he heard as a piglet, however in his dream he heard the whole song and not just what he previously knew of it. He sang the song, called Beasts of England, to the animals and they all joined in. They sang so loud that Mr. Jones wakes up and thinks that a fox got into the barn so he starts shooting his gun off and all the animals return to their stalls and sleep.

How were people/events in Animal Farm similar to people/events in Russia?

The characters and events in Animal Farm were based off of the people and events in Russia in the mid 1900’s. In chapter one, the animals are living under a totalitarian society wherein one group, the humans, control everything in the animals’ lives. They controlled their food, their work, when and where they slept, and all other aspects of the animals’ lives. The farmer represents living easily on the work of others. He was the totalitarian leader of the society. He gave the animals the bare minimum that they needed to survive, just as how communism worked in Russia. When Old Major told the animals they could have better lives controlled by themselves, Orwell was relating this to what some people who opposed communism and totalitarianism did, such as himself.

Chapter 2 Summary

Main Characters:

Napoleon, Snowball, Squealer

What took place?

Chapter two of Animal Farm begins with Old Major dying. After his death, the animals held more secret meetings about what was called Animalism. Animalism is the name of their new, ideal society based upon life without humans. The meetings started out casual but became very serious, talking about the principles of Animalism and other important factors of the new life. Some of the animals were hesitant on the thought of life without humans because their needs, such as food and shelter, were handled by the humans and because they were so accustomed to the ways of life with humans. The pigs, Napoleon, Snowball, and Squealer, were in charge of converting everyone over to Animalism. The Rebellion happened much quicker and easier than anyone imagined; most of the animals did not even think it would happen in their lifetime. On the day after Midsummer’s Eve, the humans had forgotten to feed the animals so the animals kicked down the door to the feed room and started eating to their heart’s content. The commotion stirred the humans and they started to whip and beat the animals. The animals lashed back and started fighting the humans. The humans got scared and fled the farm; the animals were overjoyed. They got rid of everything that had to do with the humans and their cruel ways except for the belongings in the house which became a museum. They changed the name of Manor Farm to Animal Farm. They also wrote the seven animal commandments on the wall of the barn. The chapter ends with the animals heading out to the harvest in the fields and when they returned five buckets of milk from the cows were gone.

How were people/events in Animal Farm similar to people/events in Russia?

In chapter two of Animal Farm, Orwell relates the people and events to Russia in the 1900’s. The citizens in both Animal Farm and Russia wanted freedom but were afraid of change. Squealer was most likely based off of Stalin’s spreader of propaganda, Molotov. The people being chased away could symbolize the fall of the Russian government before Stalin. Chapter 3 Summary

  1. It would seem that you know what you're talking about. I briefly skimmed through it so I might have missed some things but it  might be a good idea to reference parts of the story to actual historical events regarding communist uprisings. Also I think you should add your own spin on it. As it is with most reports, the report does have a tendency to sound bland, not from any conscious effort but rather from a lack of interest. A quick revision may be in order as a way to eradicate the excessive use of pronouns but other than that it seems like you were definitely paying attention.
