HOW DO I CLEAN THE SAND

I have a freshwater aquarium with sand instead of gravel and I am trying to find out how to clean it. I have been using a siphon but i suck up more sand than anything else. Please help this d**n sand is expensive.

Hover the siphon over the sand and swirl it around-- as the current from the swirling lifts the light waste, it will go straight towards the hose at the center of the current.  Also, by holding your thumb at the ready at the opposite end of the siphon, you can quickly stop it, allowing the sand to drop back to the tank floor.
