HOW DO I GET A POLICE HOLD OFF MY CAR

MY CAR WAS STOLEN AND MY TITLE WAS IN THE CAR. I NEVER REGISTERED THE CAR IN MY NAME. THE DEALERSHIP FILED FOR A DUPLICATE TITLE. DMV SAYS THEY CAN NOT GIVE ME TITLE UNTIL POLICE HOLD IS OFF. HOW DO I THAT.

since you never registered the car, i bet you did not transfer the title either.

the police do not have any proof of the ownership of the car.  they are going back to the last known owner or to the release of ownership papers the dealer filed with the dmv.

release of ownership just lets the dmv know that they no longer own the vehicle, not that you necessarily own it.

they will need time to determine who owns the vehicle before they return it to you.

expect some fines for not transfering the title and not registering the car within the allotted time frame.

sit tight and wait for them to complete the investigation.  might take awhile especially if they caught someone or made an arrest.
