  1. The SEER rating will tell you everything you'll need to know about the effeciency of the unit.

  2. Look at your electric bill and write down the cost per kilowatt hour.Look on the air conditioner and determine how many wats it uses.Divide the number of wats by 1000(1killowat) and multiply by the cost per killowat hour

  3. You'll need to know the wattage ratings of both the central unit in the attic (or wherever it might be in your house) and the condenser outside.  Add them together.  Let's say that your total rating is 4500 watts.  That's 4.5 kilowatts.  Electricity is metered by the kilowatt-hour (kilowatts times hours)  Since you only need to know the cost for one hour, multiply 4.5kw by 1 hour to get 4.5kwh (kilowatt-hour).  The power company shows your rate on your bill.  My company is currently charging 17 cents per kilowatt hour, so this unit will cost me 77 cents per hour.  Run that baby 8 hours a day and you're looking at about $183 a month just for the air conditioner.

In your case, you only need to look at one rating, since you are using the portable.  There should be a label somewhere close to the place where the plug cord goes into the unit.  Follow the same procedure as above, but you'll need to convert watts to kilowatts.  Simply divide by 1000.  For example, 300 watts equals 0.3kw.
