So the things is, I wanna play Rugby. The last time I played Rugby was in the 7th grade, and now I am in the 10th grade. I have been watching Rugby as a regular since I was 11. I want to play Rugby for this Rugby Football Club here in Olympia, and they say that it doesn't really matter if you have played or not before.

I guess what I am asking is,

What should I do before I start playing?Like what kind of condition should I do, and what should I do to get ready? What should I know about the game? It has been awhile since I have played.

As well, any other advice for me would help. I have played football in a league, for about 5 years. And I am a little on the heavy side( 210 to be exact). So I am ready for any kind of advice and change.

I for sure do not mind getting roughed up or dirty. My football tough-love family has taught me well.

Any type of guidance would be awsome.

Right now, I have to make the choice of High School Varsity Softball and Rugby.

  2. For Starters do they have a girls rugby team?

The games made up of 15 players on both sides of the field. The main objective of the game is to score more points than the other team befor the full time whistle blows which does after 80mins. 5 in the ford pack 1 prop 2 hooker 3 prop 4 lock 5 lock 6 flanker 7 flanker 8 number eight 9 half back 10 first five 11 winger 12 second five 13 center 14 winger 15 fullback. Plus theres about 6 reserves, you have to be fit and strong to play rugby and thats about it.

  4. I do not know what softball is as i'm english but i know lots on Rugby. Now your weigt is not a problem, actually it is going to be used to your advantage, if you play the front row (E.g. Hooker, Number 2). Also it depends whether you are playing rugby Union, or league as they ahvr different rules. All over you need to tone up your thig muscles, get some power so when you tackle uo can hit in hard and get them down and over. If it pleases you get the thin armour padding for your shoulders and a padded at, this cushions the blows you recieve slightly ( no it is not like American Football of which there are large chunky pads, it is fairly hin but makes  al ot of difference.

  5. Distinctive features common to both rugby codes (league and union) include the prolate spheroid ball and the ban on passing the ball forward, so that players can gain ground only by running with the ball or by kicking it.

Scoring in both games occurs by achieving either a try or a goal. A try (at goal) involves grounding the ball, that is, touching the ball to the ground over the goal line at the opponent's end of the field. (New rules say that you must show 'intent' as you do this.) A goal results from kicking the ball over the crossbar between the upright goal posts. Three different types of kicks at goal can score points: the goal kick after a try has been awarded (which if successful becomes a conversion); the drop kick; and the penalty kick. The points awarded for each vary between the games.

The main differences between the two games, besides league having teams of 13 players and union of 15, involve the tackle and its aftermath:

Union players contest possession following the tackle: depending on the situation, either a ruck or a maul occurs. League players may not contest possession after making a tackle: play is continued with a play-the-ball (AKA: "Scratch")

In league, if the team in possession fails to score before a "set of six" tackles, it surrenders possession. Union has no six-tackle rule; a team can keep the ball for an unlimited number of tackles before scoring as long as it maintains possession.

Set pieces of the union code include the scrum, where packs of opposing players push against each other for possession, and the lineout, where parallel lines of players from each team, arranged perpendicular to the touch-line (the side line) attempt to catch the ball thrown from touch (the area behind the touch-line).

In the league code, the scrum still exists, but with greatly reduced importance. Set pieces are generally started from the play-the-ball situation which has meant that rugby league has evolved into what some perceive as a faster and more attacking game with a greater emphasis on running with the ball in hand, passing and scoring tries. Many of the rugby league positions have similar names and requirements to rugby union positions but there are no flankers in rugby league. The result of these variations have led to rugby union being considered a traditional form of rugby.

  6. well firstly you should get your fitness up because rugby is a contact sport. i would definitely choose it over softball. well what position are you intending to take up? for forwards its mostly power....you know coz they have to scrum n everything. if you're gonna play as a back.....then mostly being able to run!!!!!

just work on the basics such as passing to the left or right, kicking, know the rules!!!! if you're gonna be a forward then practise the scrummage position, rucking and all the basics for the forwards.

  7. Run. Run a lot. Rugby is pretty much non-stop running so you have to be in shape. My rugby team is currently conditioning and running 5k a day, 4 days a week. Work out your legs, since you will probably play forward. You should know the basic rules of the game, but since you've been watching rugby awhile you should know what you need to know already.

  8. Ignore tomtob1, as he's English and only thinks he knows something about rugby (and can't spell/type to save himself). Get fit, get hard, and forget about 'armour'.
