99 percent of all domain registrations are for 1 year, there are a few that are longer but mostly yearly.  Once you register, as long as no one else uses that same url to register, you really shouldn't have to re-register it.....if you have the premium paid site, it'll remind you when your domain needs to be renewed and unless you tell it otherwise it'll do it automatically.  That's all you need.  Now as far as payment for your site, that is usually monthly, as far as bandwith and so forth, some plans are free some let you pay quarterly, some bi-yearly and some yearly.......the domain name registration is seperate from your hosting plan.  You can use just about any company to register a domain name, all that really does is make it so you "own" that url for a year or whatever.
