  1. Outdoor plants do best when watered at a time when they are damp from morning dew, around sun up. The reason being that if a plant is moist on leaf surfaces from say midnight to sun rise, further wetting prolongs the moisture on leaves and that is when fungus has a field day. All those long hours of wet leaves. When watering always avoid leaf wetting regardless of the hour. Drip irrigation or porous hose is best if you do not want to carefully hand water. I used a cheap flat length of that hose one gets to water the lawn, the one with thousands of little holes in the top, but I turn it upside down and bury it in the mulch around my plants. Never splash soil on your plants, that keeps fungal spores to a minimum contact. And don't believe the foliar feeding myth. It only channels water and nutrients to a good place around the plant and does NOT get in threw the leaf. Plants evolved their individual shape to channel water to the optimum place or to channel it away as the case is per species. Foliar feeding too frequently contaminates the surface with questionable products that are only of value in the soil solution. Same rules for indoor plants except water when dry per species and allow the water to drain well threw. That changes the gases in the soil of the pot and replenishes them with fresh. Roots need air just like leaves. Always water well to rinse accumulated salts out that are frequently imbalanced after a time or in accumulation from evaporation. Look up each indoor plant for water need as well as fertilizer and pH (to keep fert. availability at the best level).

  2. Water before wilting point will ensure survival of plants. But frequency and quanity of watering depends of type of plants.

Some needs water when soil is dried completely

    some...when soil is wet partially

    some...like flooding always

  3. Most plants should be watered in the morning because that allows them to dry thoughout the day. If you water too late in the day, the water will not be utilized and pool around the plant. This would increase the plants susceptibility to diseases caused by fungi. However, in extreme dry conditions it is okay to water in the midday because this still allows time for the excess to evaporate, and it may help to stimiulate photosynthesis in plants which have lost turgor pressure and shut down for the time being.

When mulching, the mulch should be placed in such a way that it covers the roots, but should not be heaped up around the crown, as this could lead to infections of diseases and rots.

  4. early evening or early morning and use multch around plant to keep moisture in ground was how i was taught.

    This is assuming out doors.
