At the restaurant... Do you follow the 10-15% tipping rule? Or how the waiter/waitress serves?

  1. Wow. I'm shocked to hear how low people think tipping averages are. Standard tipping is around 18%. Generally speaking, give 20%+ for excellent service, 15% for mediocre service, and 10% for poor service. Keep in mind most servers make $3.00/hr, and live off the tips, so be consciencious when dining out.

  2. That is not the rule!  it is 15%-20%.  If the service is bad give them the lowest amount and tell the manager.  You usually get free food or a discount.  if the service is exceptional, give them 20% and tell the manager.  If you are eating at a buffet restaraunt, you tip them a dollar a person, for essentially being a busboy and water carrier.

  3. 10% for average service, scaling up and down depending on problems or excellence.

  4. I usually use the 15% tip.

The only time I will dock a tip or not tip is if the wait staff is exceptionally rude or slow.

If it is busy you can expect everything to slow down to an extent.

Once I had a server take my order and the dissappear for an hour (before we called another waitress over and complained)...we found out later that she had gone on a  break but, did not ask anyone to 'cover' her tables...when we got our food it was over done and horrible. Not only did she not get a tip but, her manager got called over and was given a 'talking' to as well.

  5. NO. 10% is unacceptable and a slap in the face of a server (unless of course you're in Canada). I would only tip 10% if the service was below average. For average service I tip 15%, for above average I tip 20%, and for really great service I'll tip more than 20%.

You're paying them for their service. Even if all they do is bring your food and drinks, and forget refills (and you don't ask) you should at least tip 10% to 15% since you didn't have to serve yourself. Tipping less just because you had to ask for a refill is awful, too, because they may have been on their way to get it. I can't tell you how many times people have asked me for more soda/water/whatever when it was right there in my hands.

Also, please remember that not everything is the server's fault. So long as they correct their mistakes and don't become rude, you shouldn't penalize them...ESPECIALLY for a kitchen mistake.

  6. how the service is determines rater I leave a good tip

  7. If the service is good 15 to 20%. Other wise not much.

  8. I usually tip at LEAST 20%. If service was crappy maybe a little less, if service was awesome I'll throw in a little extra.

  9. generally about 15% (sometimes a little more) for good service. If service is average, 10%, if it's bad, I don't tip. If service is really good, 20%.

  10. I don't tip a percentage because if I decide I want a water and a side salad that doesn't mean the waitress is doing any less work than if I ordered a steak and a glass of wine.  They still fill the glasses and bring over the plate, so my general rule is at least $3 a person, if it's only two people and you're eating at your basic applebees type place I tip around $7, if it's a really good service I'll tip as high as I want to.  Today I was eating a sandwich with my Mother In Law and we tipped the waitress $5 and she acted like it was this huge sacrifice.  People need to learn to tip like you're supposed to, and no one should be surprised with a $5 tip from two people.

  11. it may have been 10% twenty friggin years ago! Now it is 18-20%.
