  1. Kalendri sounds like he/she is talking about the dominican republic.  As someone already stated, Dominican Republic is a poor country and also shares its border with haiti, another poverty stricken country.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the US and has become very commercialized. It is VERY safe for tourists, even in the rural areas.

  2. Dangerous, very dangerous if you want to mingle with real natives. Pickpockets, shysters, liars. (Murderers of tourists, too, according to the newspaper reports of missing and murdered tourists far from hotels.)

If you stay within the hotel grounds, it is great fun. The staff in hotels are the greatest people on this Earth. Even in Cuba. The cooked food is fantastic. The fruit, luscious and sweet. Do not forget to thoroughly wash all fruit (even bananas) before you eat. Washing them in ocean water is okay. Wash them yourself.

I go regularly. In my earlier visits when I thought all the natives would be kind, I went into towns on my own, and was pickopcketted once, had stuff I had bought at a market ripped out of my hands on another occasion. I gave up. Nowadays, I go only where the hotels arrange trips. The police are a bad not-funny joke, because they know a tourist is not going to be able to wait for days and days during the official investigation.

  3. If your going as a TOURIST stay in those areas.  The Dominican Republic is a poor country ( lots of children beg for money) and don't forget the country Haiti shares its border.  Puerto Rico is very popular with the tourist, the beaches are lovely, the people are friendly. (Knowing Spanish is a plus). P.R. is more expensive then the D.R. However unless you know the area it's best to travel with friends. Have FUN.
