Because if the ones that suffer from poverty can get a proper education they can also get a proper job that they can get a proper salary out of. The reason that so many are poor in todays society is because of the lack of education that they suffer from. So they're stuck with the low wage job that doesn't require a high education.

In general people earn in relation to what they are able to produce.  The more you are able to produce in a given amount of time, the more you earn. The more you earn, the less likely you are to be poor.

So, how can you produce more in a given amount of time?  Either you invest your time in learning how to do your job better and/or more efficiently or you let someone else teach you how.  In either case, that's education.
