  1. Perhaps he manipulated the hat like Draco did in the first book?

Doesn't he fit into Hufflepuff nicely?

  2. I've been wondering too........maybe he did have those values at the time of sorting.....i personally feel he might have seen his dear ones ending up dead in a brutual sort of way or something like that  and that made him loose his nerves or fear for himself......he then sought protection of those who were more powerful....like James and co. at school and then voldy......

  3. Maybe the Sorting Hat had had a bad night sleep ...

  4. my theory is that he was all those things at one time: daring, brave, chivalrous, but then he hung w/ the wrong crowd and was "brainwashed", so to speak.

  5. The hat cannot predict change in the student, all it knows is what they are like at the time of the sorting, perhaps Pettigrew changed into the sniveling, cowerdly, disgrace that we all love to hate, late in his hogwarts years.

  6. Just because he sold them to Voldy doesn't mean he dodn't have some of Gryffindors triats. After all he was loyal to voldy. And at the time they were in school he was loyal to James

  7. i havent got a clue... he doesnt really fit into any house, but i guess he wanted to be in Gryfindor or perhaps he used to have courage before...

  8. well he doesn't seem that bright so he couldn't go into ravenclaw and he may not have been pure blood so he wouldn't have gone into slytherin (my theory is the hat read not harry but the piece of voldemort he carried thus wanting to put him into slytherin since we know harry was half blood, and it took riddle because half or not he was the last true heir to slytherin)....what are hufflepuffs traits?

  9. Maybe because he really wanted to be there with his friends.  The sorting hat also listens to the wants of the person.  Take Harry for an example.  He wanted to be in Gryffindor, even though the hat thought Slytherin was the place for him.

  10. I know! Maybe he was a good guy on his very first day of Hogwarts, then it was all down hill from there.

  11. Well we have to remember the Sorting Hat doesn't know what sniveling ungrateful lying backstabbing two timing.. sorry The Hat only knows what you are at 11. Most kids are fairly innocent and show no signs of evil. I bet at 11 Peter showed some minute traces of courage and probably pleaded with The Hat to put him into Gryffindor seeing Sirius and Lupin go there -Not Potter he's after Pettigrew- Recall what Dumbledore said "I always thought we sorted to early" Cause maybe in another year kids would really develop into who they are.. deceiving..plottin..horrible..little boys who will in a few short years be considered scum of the Earth.

  12. Peter was probably a little nice boy when he first started Hogwarts, but then...he got bad and he got torn into al the bad things like Death Eaters and etc.

  13. I have always questioned and disputed this very question- I could imagine how that rat scum could 'tarnish' brave gryffindor's name.

    Some facts that were presented to me aswell as thought were;

Something could have happened to make him such a Coward, but before he was different- Like Dumbledore said- are choices define who we are, not our ablities- but this confuses me even more- That git had neither gryffinfor-like qualities.

The Sorting Hat made a mistake (indeed!)

Beneath his cowardness, he displayed some sort of odd, very distorted, courage, in the way that he did things like cut his hand off for Voldy (although it was either that or, I suspect, death), and release Harry- but that really can't be described as heroic.

Perhaps, even, he asked the sorting hat to place him in Gryffindor and he showed no other characteritics of any other house?

And my desperate, final, explaination IS, it was a plot point for JK- the story needed a rat in the circle of friends and Peter really needed to be a gryffindor to be IN that circle.

    Cheers!

    Nina

  14. Perhaps he actually was brave at times when he was young but grew out of it so to say.

  15. The sorting hat takes peoples account into perspective, so maybe pettigrew wanted to go into Gryffindor.

  16. D'y'know, I always wondered that... but remember in "The Prince's Tale" Dumbledore tells Snape that he thinks the sorting takes place too soon, i.e., he is hinting that Snape should be in Gryffindor. Perhaps the same is true for Peter, that he should have been in Slytherin or Hufflepuff, but the Hat didn't recognise this at such a young age.

  17. i have no idea....i was just thinking the same thing....but then again the more you think about it ...he doesnt really fit into any of them
