Question:

HP7400 Printer Problems?

I have a Hp7400 Al-In-One printer and I cannot get it to scan. I contacted Office Depot (extended warranty) and they said it is my PC causing this problem, not the printer. They also said I must have downloaded some software that is conflicting with the scan options. I fully uninstalled the software and reinstalled before calling OD, so how can I figure out how to fix this problem. I need to scan ASAP and don't know what else to do. HP said since my warranty is out, I would have to pay $74 just to talk to someone to see if they could help, but I got this printer for only $129 + tax when I bought a laptop for someone. I really hate to have to pay that much to figure this problem out. I have uninstalled several things and tried reinstalling etc., but no was no help in solving this error. The window states I "need to run software for this option." Anyone with knowledge as to figuring this out? Thanks!

  1. Al-In-One printers have a special suite of software that needs to be installed on the computer and running at the time when you are trying to scan. When you uninstalled & reinstalled the software, did you reboot the computer after each step? That can make a significant difference in how the computer and software interact and work correctly. You really should reboot the computer after each uninstall process as well as any installation process. It is a pain, but helps a lot with making sure everything is properly registered within the computer for the next step. Once you have the program installed, you must start it and have it running before you start the scan process and make sure that it is setup & recognizes the Al-In-One printer. Are you able to make copies with the scanner without the computer? This tells us if the scanner and unit overall are operating at a basic level internally. Then we can worry about the communications aspect.

Interesting that it was working before and then quit. Microsoft system updates are often times culprits of problems and this may be what happened to you. You might try to see if there is an updated driver or software patch update on HP's website for your 7400 all-in-one that might help. There could be a software conflict of some kind. Did you install or do anything new or different just before this problem started?
